Dyson Invests In New Tech To Double Smartphone Battery Life
Dyson is investing 15 million in a new type of battery that promises to double smartphone battery life and allow electric cars to drive over 600 miles per charge.

The British vacuum company will invest in the University of Michigan spin-off called Sakti3, which has developed next generation solid-state technology that can store twice as much energy as traditional rechargeable batteries.

As part of the investment, Dyson has entered into a joint development agreement to commercialize Sakti3's solid-state battery technology. The new batteries promise to store twice as much energy as today's liquid-based lithium batteries, that are used in everything from smartphones and tablets to cars, robots, and renewable energy sources such as solar panels and wind turbines.

"Sakti3 has achieved leaps in performance, which current battery technology simply can't," said company founder James Dyson. "It's these fundamental technologies - batteries, motors - that allow machines to work properly."

Battery technology is one of the major limiting factors of portable or cordless electronic products today. While surrounding computer technologies have progressed at a staggering rate, batteries haven't kept up, leading to user frustration and limits on what can be done.

The lithium-ion technologies used in today's best batteries have barely progressed since their introduction in 1991 by Sony. There has been improvement in longevity and charging times, but not a great deal in terms of the amount of energy that batteries store.

Mobile electronics have been forced to choose: either be heavier and thicker, or else suffer from poor battery life, which is one of the reasons products like the iPhone rarely last longer than a day on a single charge.

Most batteries rely on a liquid mixture of reactive compounds, which store energy from the mains and release it when required through chemical reactions within the cell in the form of electricity.

Sakti3's solid-state technology uses solid lithium electrodes instead of a liquid mix of chemicals, which doubles the amount of energy that can be stored within a battery.

The eight-year-old company claims its solid-state batteries can store over 1,000 watt hours per liter, which is almost double the best traditional lithium-ion batteries available today with an energy density of up to 620 watts per hour per litre. That increased energy density could effectively double the battery life of mobile electronics, extend the range of electric vehicles and lead to thinner and lighter technology.

The batteries also promise to be cheaper to manufacture, longer lasting and be more environmentally friendly than current lithium-ion batteries. Solid-state batteries also remove some of the safety issues around the explosive nature of liquid batteries.

The investment from Dyson guarantees that the new battery technology will appear first in Dyson products, including new versions of its cordless machines and robotic vacuum cleaners. But the applications for the technology go far beyond cleaning products.

Additional investors in Sakti3 include Khosla Ventures, General Motors and others.

The publication of key points for the introduction of a capacity market in France lead to Hildegard M"uller, chairwoman of the energy trade association BDEW, calling for an open discussion of a German capacity market for energy that ensures the security of supply.

Great Britain had also decided in favour of setting up a capacity market and a dozen other European countries were discussing the topic, which showed that a reform of the electricity market design was not a national, but a European challenge, Mrs M"uller pointed out. Hence, it was important that the German discussion was open with regard to the outcome and would be conducted with a European, cross-border approach. Mrs M"uller emphasised that the BDEW proposal for a capacity market supported and promoted the European internal energy market.

In a capacity market reliable sources of capacity receive payment alongside their electricity revenues to ensure that they deliver energy whenever needed if other sources, in particular the growing amount of intermittent renewable energy sources, do not deliver enough energy to satisfy demand.

In late November 2014 Vice-Chancellor and Energy Minister Sigmar Gabriel had rejected the idea of having a capacity market for the time being. His ministry had published a Green Paper on the future development of the German electricity market in October 2014, which has been put up for consultation. Comments are due by 1 March 2015. The Green Paper shall be followed up by a White Paper with specific proposals at the end of May 2015.

Whether the discussion on a German capacity market was open with regard to the outcome, has been questioned by market participants. At a recent energy conference, Rainer Baake, Secretary of State in the Federal Ministry of Economics, an influential aide to Minister of Economics, Sigmar Gabriel, rejected this view. Yet he said that the ministry would not adopt any model just for the purpose of subsidizing unprofitable thermal power plants.

The French proposal for a capacity market contains various measures to ensure sufficient generation at all times and reduce consumption so as to avoid shortages. Only in the event that these measures are not enough a remuneration shall be paid for additional production or reducing consumption further. The French Energy Ministry also points out that the capacity market mechanism is only one tool among others, naming inter alia the development of power storage.

Using either the generator, or smart electronics once again, this electricity is converted into the most optimal frequency (Europe is 50Hz while North America is 60Hz) for transmission, and is sent along those big wires to your home.HOW LONG DOES IT FOR A WIND TURBINE TO PAY FOR ITSELF? Various studies report various results for how long it will take a wind turbine to pay for itself. This of course relies on a variety of factors: * cost of electricity in your location * speeds of wind * incentives or pay-back by the government * size of turbine However, a rough guesstimate can range from 2-10 years to pay back the investment. However, one should be careful to note here that a typical wind turbine will last for 25+ years. However, one would hope that in those 25 years there are no major repairs that need to be done to the turbine. Also, one would hope that it lasts at least 50+ years, but naturally with this kind of lifespan there will be some repairs needed.HOW MUCH POWER DO THOSE BIG TURBINES CREATE? Wind turbines come in many sizes, so it's really hard to answer this question. However, most turbines range in output from 250 W to as large as 1.8 MW. And it has been a major focus of my own advocacy over the last decades. But as much as I appreciate the seriousness of the situation, I don't dwell on gloom and doom. Challenges exist to be tackled head-on. I'd like to look at this web of interdependencies as a huge opportunity to drive progress and positive change -- through sensible policy, for sure, but especially through innovation and smart investments. As so often, entrepreneurs have a major role to play. The good news is that many are doing it already and at greater scale than ever before. It is one of the reasons why, last June, we launched the B Team, a global group of business leaders which aims to deliver a new way of doing business that prioritizes people and planet alongside profit -- a "Plan B" for businesses the world over. Zooming in a little, one of the big questions in the coming years is how we can ensure access to safe, clean and sustainable energy for our and future generations. Many investors are still reluctant to grapple with what they see as risky early-stage concepts. But I am convinced that some of these innovations and concepts will succeed, and organizations like the Carbon War Room are already helping to get billion-dollar markets off the ground that could save billions of tons of carbon emissions. The challenge is for investors to create scenarios where they can back these sorts of efforts without throwing too much money down the drain. The MIT Technology Review recently pointed out that, in the US, private foundations can count investments in start-ups as charitable grants - even if they go on to deliver massive returns. The catch is that the start-ups have to clearly be too risky for normal investors, and have to clearly serve a philanthropic role. But ways need to be found to ensure that resources go into the right ideas from the right places. This also means that the world needs to start a conversation about energy subsidies. Sceptics frequently argue that low-carbon renewable energy costs more than conventional fossil energy.
