Biofuels have been around as long as cars have.

A biofuel is a fuel that contains energy from geologically recent carbon fixation. These fuels are produced from living organisms.

Generating Electricity from Wing Waves.

Wind turbines, like windmills, are mounted on a tower to capture the most energy. At 100 feet (30 meters) or more aboveground, they can take advantage of the faster and less turbulent wind.

Producing electricity from solar energy.

Solar energy is a free, inexhaustible resource, yet harnessing it is a relatively new idea. The ability to use solar power for heat was the first discovery.

Turbines catch the wind's energy with their propeller-like blades.

A blade acts much like an airplane wing. When the wind blows, a pocket of low-pressure air forms on the downwind side of the blade.

We have been harnessing the wind's energy for hundreds of years.

For utility-scale sources of wind energy, a large number of wind turbines are usually built close together to form awind plant.

Biofuels are produced from living organisms.

In order to be considered a biofuel the fuel must contain over 80 percent renewable materials.

Geothermal energy is the heat from the Earth.

Resources of geothermal energy range from the shallow ground to hot water and hot rock found a few miles beneath the Earth's surface, and down even deeper to the extremely high temperatures of molten rock called magma.

Geothermal heat pumps can tap into this resource to heat and cool buildings.

A geothermal heat pump system consists of a heat pump, an air delivery system (ductwork), and a heat exchanger-a system of pipes buried in the shallow ground near the building.

In the future, civilization will be forced to research and develop alternative energy sources.

Possession of surplus energy is, of course, a requisite for any kind of civilization, for if man possesses merely the energy of his own muscles, he must expend all his strength - mental and physical - to obtain the bare necessities of life.

Writ large, around the world, liquid fuel (generally diesel) has a relatively small role in providing electricity and thus the "oil" and "electricity" domains have a minimal overlap. There are, however, exceptions that are notable generally in being "islands". These islands can be temporal (power supply disruption leading to use of generators while the electric grid is restored), infrastructure (providing electricity to a site remote from the existing power grid -- such as temporary or remote military bases) and/or traditional geographic islands -- land surrounded by sea.

And, with oil prices above $80 barrel and unlikely to ever return to a few $10s per barrel, diesel-generated electricity is expensive, per kilowatt hour (kWh), compared to most other electricity options.

This makes these islands particularly appropriate for the introduction of renewable energy systems to displace oil. Especially as the prices have to account not just for the price of crude, but the the full price of transporting and storing the oil along with operating the diesel electricity generators. The U.S. military's term for this: Fully-Burdened Cost of Fuel (FBCF). With a FBCF of $10s per gallon (plus lives at risk) in remote operating areas of Afghanistan, it isn't surprising that solar panels have displaced traditional diesel generators for some Marines in Afghanistan. To date, however, such programs have been partial -- perhaps even on the margens -- reductions of island oil demand for electricity.

This, however, is changing.

The small Pacific island nation of Tokelau is to get a solar makeover. Right now, Tokelau is burning about 2000 barrels a year of diesel shipped in from New Zealand at a cost of NZ$1 millon (e.g., with shipping, about $500 per barrel or over $10 per gallon). That diesel provides Tokelau's 1400 people about 16 hours a day of electricity.

This is about to change as New Zealand's Power Smart Solar will replace the diesel generators with solar systems -- and improve the electricity system to a 24/7 supply -- and turn Tokelau to the first 100 percent solar electric nation.
The installation of 4,032 solar panels (one megawatt of solar) and batteries across the three atolls will eliminate diesel fuel use and provide consistent high quality electricity. The original tender specification called for the solar systems to supply 90% of Tokelau's electricity demand..... Powersmart Solar will be installing solar systems capable of providing 150% of current electricity demand allowing the Tokelauans to expand their electricity use without increasing diesel use.

The following video provides a conceptual look at one of the coming installations. This is for Nukunonu Atoll by Powersmart Solar and IT Power. The system will comprise of 1152 x 230 Watt solar panels or 265 kW.

Using solar pv and batteries to provide 24/7 electricity in replacing part-time electricity that prices out, in a full system cost, at well over 50 cents per kilowatt hour (compared to a U.S. average of about 10 cents) is a 'no brainer'. While, right now, solar PV is far from a 'no-brainer' for every electric consumer around the world, increasingly, as solar pv prices fall (and other electricity prices/costs rise), ever more 'islands' are joining Tokelau's atolls as prime locations for major renewable installations.

On Friday night PowerSmart, a solar electricity company from Mount Maunganui, took out the award for innovation in Clean-tech and Sustainability at the 2012 NZ Innovators Awards in Auckland.

It was a huge honour to be recognised amongst the other great companies that Idealog, Bayer, and Ideas Accelerator brought together for the evening. To win New Zealand Innovators - Clean Tech is a real pleasure and we're very proud of our work on the Tokelau Renewable Energy Project.

The night brought together an impressive range of companies all doing very exciting things that provide us with real inspiration to keep building on what we've started at PowerSmart. We truly enjoy competing for awards like NZ Innovators because so many New Zealand companies are doing things that we can all be very proud of.

We're a positive and fast-paced bunch committed to world class results and we all should take the time to recognise what a great achievement the Tokelau Renewable Energy Project is. PowerSmart developed from a business concept that it's three founders shared from their University days, where renewable energies would play a big part in today's world. After moving back to New Zealand Mike Bassett-Smith and Shane Robinson started working together to define the scope of their endeavour. Beginning with little other than two laptops and a few surf boards, the idea grew and eventually Dean Parchomchuk was called out to New Zealand to help with the company's bright idea.

Now based in Mount Maunganui, the company is in its fifth year, has grown to 21 employees and has a range of contacts from all over the world. It is now the largest solar power company operating in New Zealand, with an impressive portfolio ranging from small home residential systems to large commercial systems. PowerSmart is about to commission a 1 Megawatt NZAID funded system in Tokelau that is one of the largest off-grid solar systems in the world. They are also panel members for the ACT solar school program, in which the ACT Government is providing $51 million in funding available for schools to install solar and other renewable power systems.

Earlier this year PowerSmart was named United Travel Emerging Exporter of the Year at the BNZ Bay of Plenty Export NZ Awards. They are also finalists in the 2012 Sustainable Business Network and NZ Sustainable 60 Awards and have recently ranked 14th in The New Zealand Herald's Green 50 list of top Kiwi companies helping the environment. In 2011 they won the SEANZ award for 'Largest Small Scale Renewable/Distributed Generation Installation' and in 2010 they won the Sustainable Business Network 'People's Choice Award' and 'Trailblazer Small and Medium Business Award'.

Tokelau Renewable Energy Project
PowerSmart is the lead contractor for the Tokelau Renewable Energy Project which will replace the diesel electricity systems currently operating on each of the islands with solar power systems and battery storage. For this project PowerSmart has collaborated with IT Power Australia, the project is funded by The New Zealand Aid Programme and supported by the Government of Tokelau. The last of the three systems is almost complete and later this month PowerSmart will switch on the system on Atafu Atoll, the third and final solar power system that will enable Tokelau to become 100% solar powered.

PowerSmart will shortly commission the third and final unit in its three-atoll solar generation project in the Tokelau Islands.
The Tauranga-based firm is the lead contractor in the $7 million development which will free the communities there of their dependence on increasingly expensive diesel generation.
The 1 MW project is one of the largest off-grid solar power systems in the world and will make Tokelau the first community in the world to meet all its electricity needs with solar energy, PowerSmart says. Last week the development won PowerSmart the Clean-tech and Sustainability section of the NZ Innovators Awards.
PowerSmart managing director Mike Bassett-Smith says getting the tender for the Tokelau project ahead of companies from all over the world was a "big win" for the four-year old business.
"News of the contract has also reached our New Zealand residential customers and has led to an increase in enquiries by home owners requesting grid connected solar power to offset their increasing power bills," he says.
Scale
The Tokelau Renewable Energy Project, funded by New Zealand Aid, was a collaboration between PowerSmart and Canberra-based energy consulting firm IT Power Australia. Work started in mid-June.
The project involves the installation of 4,032 photovoltaic panels, 392 inverters and 1,344 batteries across the three atolls. It will replace a series of diesel generators which were burning about 200 litres of fuel a day to supply the islands' 1,500 inhabitants.
While the original tender had sought a system capable of meeting 90 per cent of the islands' electricity needs, creative design and the scale of the PowerSmart proposal means the new system will be sufficient to meet a 50 per cent increase in demand without recourse to diesel generation.
The first system, on Fakaofo atoll, was switched on in early August after a six-week construction period. The Nukunonu system was connected in mid-September, and the final system on Atafu is on schedule for commissioning at the end of the month.
Bassett-Smith says the company is preparing to move on to other projects.
PowerSmart has 21 staff, making it the largest solar power company operating in New Zealand, he says. It is also a panel member to the solar school programme in Canberra, where the capital territory government is providing $51 million for schools to install solar and other renewable power systems.
